Faultline was built quite instinctively, allowing each mark to influence what came next. I worked with sweeping layers, scraping back areas and building others up until the composition began to find its own direction. There’s something raw and slightly unpredictable about it, with traces of each layer left visible beneath the next.
It’s one of those paintings that evolved as I worked on it, rather than beginning with a fixed idea, and I think that’s what gives it its energy.
The finished piece hints at something almost landscape-like, but the forms can become something entirely different depending on who is looking at them.
